PREVIEW ADVANCED READER EXCERPT – CHAPTER ONE

Chapter 1

Abbey picked Lotus up from her home on the Monday morning after Lotus’s birthday. There were less than two months left in their current year. Everything was green and in flower. Both girls were nervous. It wasn’t the first time they had driven to school together, but it was the first time they would do so as a couple. Not that anybody else would know the difference.

As soon as she got into the car, Lotus tried to kiss Abbey, who hesitantly pulled her head away. “Um… As much as I want to kiss you, your parents might see us,” Abbey said, uncomfortably. “You don’t want my parents to know about us?” Lotus asked, looking surprised. “I would prefer keeping this just between us,” Abbey said. “That’s okay, I guess,” Lotus said. “Mom and Dad are seriously cool about me being gay. It wouldn’t be a problem for them.” Abbey kept driving. She sensed that Lotus wasn’t fully satisfied that she couldn’t tell her parents about them. For Abbey, coming out to Lotus had been a big step. She didn’t regret it, but she wasn’t ready to let anybody else to know about her.

This doesn’t make any sense, Abbey thought. She had never cared about what others thought of her. It was an attitude that had taken her to the top of the university social hierarchy and made her the captain of the basketball team. Now she was suddenly worried about people knowing that she was gay. They arrived in the schools crowded parking lot. The girls jumped out of the car and headed toward the main red brick building. Their day started with Mr. Samuels’s history class. It wasn’t Abbey’s strongest subject, but she thought that Mr. Samuels was cool, for a teacher.

“Are you still hanging out with the fag?” someone yelled. Abbey and Lotus turned and saw Mina coming from the other direction. Giselle was with her. Abbey had expected this encounter, but it still made her uncomfortable. She glared at Mina and Giselle, annoyed but unsure of what to say. Lotus positioned herself close to Abbey as if looking for protection. “Coming to school together, huh? So you are a queer too, and your girlfriend is eating out your pussy?” Mina asked. “I’m not gay, and Lotus isn’t my girlfriend,” Abbey said. She was surprised at the confidence in her voice, considering that she was lying. Lotus was looking more and more uncomfortable. Abbey wanted to say something to protect her girlfriend’s dignity. But as hard as she tried, she couldn’t think of anything that she could say without revealing herself. Though she felt like she was betraying Lotus, she stayed quiet.
