CHAPTER 1
THE WRISTWATCH BUZZED

THE WRISTWATCH BUZZED, its face blinking with an urgent red flash. It was time for Stephon to race.
A regular at the Toronto VR Cafe, he had developed a full prerace routine. His expression solemn, Stephon would dress himself in the skintight haptic suit, carefully comb his hair, and then place the conch-shaped helmet on his head.
Then he squeezed into the cockpit-cramped, narrow, not unlike what Stephon had imagined the driver’s seat of a Formula 1 race car felt like.
Take a deep breath. Empty the mind. Check that all physiological measurements are in the safe zone.
As Stephon began to drive, his anxiety melted away. The colors of the simulated racing world danced before his eyes.
Stephon cruised to another victory.
